Monet, Claude

Claude Oscar Monet (Paris, 14 November 1840 - Giverny, 6 December 1926) was a French painter and the acknowledged father of Impressionism. He looked to nature as the essential source of inspiration and sought to capture the immediate impression of light, atmosphere, and color without relying on academic formulas. His art transformed landscape painting and modern vision itself. Through his serial studies and his lifelong devotion to changing effects of light, Monet became one of the defining figures of modern painting.
