Mantegna, Andrea

Andrea Mantegna (Isola di Carturo, 1431 - Mantua, 13 September 1506) was an Italian painter and engraver. Trained in Padua, he developed a passion for archaeology, a rigorous command of perspective, and a monumental treatment of the human figure. His encounters with Tuscan innovations, with Donatello, and later with artists such as Piero della Francesca and Giovanni Bellini deepened his language. Mantegna is considered one of the great classicizing painters of the Renaissance and a decisive figure in northern Italian art.
