Antonello da Messina (c. 1430-1479) was an Italian painter who played a crucial role in bringing Netherlandish pictorial techniques into dialogue with Italian art. He is celebrated for his penetrating portraits, luminous surfaces, and carefully structured altarpieces. His work helped renew fifteenth-century painting in both southern and northern Italy.
