Schiele, Egon

Egon Schiele (Tulln an der Donau, 12 June 1890 - Vienna, 31 October 1918) was an Austrian painter and draftsman and one of the most intense voices of early Expressionism. A pupil and then independent counterpart of Gustav Klimt, he developed a nervous, incisive language centered on the body, psychological tension, and existential fragility. His portraits, self-portraits, and figure compositions remain among the most powerful images of modern art.
