Gigante, Giacinto

Giacinto Gigante (Naples, 11 July 1806 - Naples, 29 September 1876) was an Italian painter, especially renowned for landscapes and views, and was the leading figure of the so-called School of Posillipo. After beginning as a lithographer and engraver, he gradually established himself as a painter and later excelled in watercolor. His art is closely tied to plein-air observation and to a luminous, highly personal treatment of landscape. He is also remembered for refining a watercolor technique that gave his images a distinctive sense of relief.
