Millet, Jean-François

Jean-Francois Millet (Greville-Hague, 9 October 1814 - Barbizon, 20 January 1875) was a French painter. After beginning with portraiture and other marketable genres, he turned increasingly toward rural subjects and scenes of peasant life. In his mature works, especially those linked to Barbizon, laborers and humble figures are portrayed with dignity, gravity, and moral strength. His vision profoundly influenced later artists, including Vincent van Gogh and Salvador Dali.
