Meléndez, Luis

Luis Melendez (Naples, 1716 - Madrid, 1780) was a Spanish painter celebrated above all for his still lifes. Active mainly in Spain, he created compositions of fruits, vegetables, fish, and kitchen objects marked by sober monumentality, luminous realism, and an extraordinary tactile presence. He is considered one of the greatest still-life painters of eighteenth-century Europe.
