Cézanne, Paul

Paul Cezanne (Aix-en-Provence, 19 January 1839 - Aix-en-Provence, 22 October 1906) was a French painter and one of the most singular figures of Post-Impressionism. Though he came into contact with the Impressionists in Paris, he followed a different path, seeking to unite visual perception with a rational understanding of form and space. He pursued this goal through color rather than traditional drawing, chiaroscuro, or perspective. His research opened the way to Cubism and made him one of the decisive innovators of modern painting.
