Cot, Pierre Auguste

Pierre Auguste Cot (Bedarieux, 1837 - Paris, 2 August 1883) was a French painter. After studying in Toulouse and then in Paris under Leon Cogniet, Alexandre Cabanel, and William Bouguereau, he made a successful debut at the Salon of 1863 and quickly rose in popularity. Much admired as a portraitist, he is also remembered for imaginative and sentimental works such as Springtime and The Storm. He later taught painting at the Academie Julian and received major honors, including the Legion of Honour.
